Basket of Waste Services roadshow makes a stop in Sub-council 8

The Urban Waste
Management Directorate’s (UWM) Basket of Waste Services roadshow is going to
make a stop at the Charles Morkel Community Hall today, Tuesday, 28 March 2023.
This will give residents in Somerset West the opportunity to engage with UWM
representatives, and discuss any issues and challenges they may have.
The following departments will be available for engagement:
- Cleansing Services: Area cleaning, removal of illegal dumping and refuse collection in informal settlements.
- Refuse Collection Services: Emptying the 240l wheelie bins on collection day, the running of the Think-Twice recycling collection service in participating areas, and to find the contact details of the relevant service provider.
- Waste Minimisation: Guiding all stakeholders on strategies to increase waste minimisation and helping to facilitate a circular economy in Cape Town.
- Events and Partnerships: Assisting with once-off volunteer community clean-up events and other partnerships.
- Policy and Strategy: Strategic support, accreditation of waste management businesses, responsible for Integrated Waste Management Policy and By-law and the development of UWM sector plan.
- By-law Enforcement: Waging the war on illegal dumping through enforcement of the Integrated Waste Management By-law.
'The UWM Basket of Waste Services roadshow is planned to run between March and November 2023.
'In many cases, the solution to Capetonians' waste challenges already exists in our communities, but they are not aware of the solutions, or they need guidance on how to access assistance. The Basket of Waste Services roadshow aims to correct this by raising awareness of the work we are doing.
'We encourage residents to engage with our representatives on site around particular challenges their community might be struggling with, to see if there are any services or programmes which can help,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
